Design and performance of the ALICE TRD front-end electronics
نویسنده
چکیده
The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) of the ALICE experiment at CERN incorporates 1.2 million channels which are individually read out and processed. The front-end electronics (FEE) utilizes two custom chips: an 18 channel analog preamplifier and shaper (PASA) and a mixed-signal chip, performing 10 bit analog-to-digital conversion, event buffering and local tracking (TRAP). Both chips together are packaged as a 4 4 cm ball grid array multi chip module (MCM). More than 65 k of these will be integrated on the detector. In fall 2004, a small prototype implementing 140 MCMs was successfully tested at CERN. The MCMs demonstrate an ADC performance of 9.5 effective bits while the digital back-end is operating, including four RISC processors. The electronic noise of the PASA mounted on the detector was measured with the digital back-end to be below 1200 electrons. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) [1] is one of the main detector components of the ALICE experiment. It consists of 18 supermodules mounted cylindrical around the beam axis of the LHC. Every supermodule is assembled out of 30 Readout Chambers (ROC) of different types. These ROCs are equipped with front end electronics (FEE) and tested at the Institut für Kernphysik Frankfurt (IKF) [2]. I...

In December 2009 a milestone of the ALICE Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) [1] was marked when the detector was turned on to record tracks of particles produced by first stable beams in collision at the Large Hadron Collider. We report here the performance of the detector during the ensuing data taking period of 2 weeks. Of the 18 TRD supermodules, 7 are currently installed in the ALICE setu...

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) of the ALICE experiment at LHC is designed to provide electron/pion identification and tracking of all charged particles [1]. The TRD will supplement the TPC electron/pion identification by a pion rejection factor of the order of 100 at momenta above 1 GeV/c, allowing precision measurements of quarkonia. Sophisticated on-detector electronics [2] is design...

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) belongs to the central barrel detectors of the ALICE experiment at the LHC at CERN. It is composed of 540 large area drift chambers, with a total of 1181952 readout pads (1728 or 2304 per chamber). To ensure the optimal performance of the detector, designed for electron/pion identification and charged particle tracking, including triggering for high-pt el...
